HelloSign becomes Dropbox Sign: a rebrand that erased a known name

In 2022 Dropbox rebranded HelloSign — the established e-signature service it had acquired in 2019 — as 'Dropbox Sign,' also renaming HelloWorks to Dropbox Forms and HelloFax to Dropbox Fax, folding a recognized independent brand under the Dropbox umbrella.
What happened
Dropbox completed its acquisition of HelloSign in 2019, paying around $230 million for an e-signature company with its own loyal customer base and brand recognition built up since 2011. For three years Dropbox kept the HelloSign name.
In 2022 Dropbox rebranded the whole family: HelloSign became Dropbox Sign, the HelloSign API became the Dropbox Sign API, HelloWorks became Dropbox Forms, and HelloFax became Dropbox Fax. The team walked customers through the change in a November 2022 session. Dropbox emphasized continuity — sign-ins, passwords, and pricing were unchanged, and some plans gained Dropbox Forms transactions — but the familiar HelloSign identity that customers had chosen and trusted was retired in favor of Dropbox's own brand.
The rebrand drew the practical complaints that accompany any forced renaming: users and integrators had to recognize that a service they had vetted and adopted under one name was now the same product under another, and confusion over 'is Dropbox Sign the same as HelloSign?' persisted on forums. The change also tied the e-signature product's reputation directly to Dropbox — a coupling that would prove consequential when the Dropbox Sign environment was breached in 2024.
Impact
Absorbing HelloSign's well-known name into 'Dropbox Sign' was a low-severity but real form of product change: it erased a brand customers had specifically chosen and pulled the service fully into Dropbox's orbit. Beyond the renaming friction, it meant HelloSign's customers were now Dropbox customers in name and trust — so when the 2024 Dropbox Sign breach exposed customer data and authentication secrets, the reputational damage flowed straight to the rebranded service.
