The Dropbox product graveyard

The email client Dropbox bought in 2013 for roughly $100 million. Announced dead alongside Carousel on December 7, 2015, citing a focus on collaboration; the app stopped working February 26, 2016, and the team was redirected to Dropbox Paper.

A standalone photo and video gallery app launched April 2014. Announced dead December 7, 2015 in the same post as Mailbox, on the reasoning that most users preferred photos inside the main Dropbox app; it stopped working March 31, 2016.

Two developer-platform tools retired together: the higher-level Sync API for mobile file syncing (deprecated October 23, 2015) and the Datastore API for structured cross-device data (launched 2013, shut down April 29, 2016). Apps built on Datastores had to be rebuilt as plain file storage or abandoned.

The real-time collaborative-notes app Dropbox acquired in 2014 and open-sourced in 2015. Dropbox announced on April 20, 2017 that Hackpad would be discontinued July 19, 2017, with documents automatically migrated into Dropbox Paper; users could opt out and export their files instead. Hackpad founder Igor Kofman, by then leading Paper, said Paper "takes many of Hackpad's best features...and adds a lot more, including additional security features, faster search, and more visibility for teams."

The static file-hosting feature available since Dropbox's early days. It became a normal private folder for free Basic users on March 15, 2017, and Dropbox disabled public links for every remaining user on September 1, 2017 — breaking old links across forums, documentation, and the wider web with no automatic migration.

Dropbox's original developer API, deprecated June 28, 2016 and finally switched off September 28, 2017. Third-party developers had to rewrite for the incompatible v2 API; many smaller and abandoned tools that integrated Dropbox sync simply stopped working.

A portfolio feature for Professional and Business-Advanced/Enterprise/Education plans, letting teams present and track files with analytics. "Dropbox has decided to discontinue the Showcase feature from January 2021," ending access to the Showcase section, new showcases, existing showcases, and their analytics — though the underlying files stayed in users' regular Dropbox storage. Dropbox said usage was mainly for final delivery, and it would focus instead on branded sharing, traffic and insights, and Dropbox Transfer.

The e-signature company Dropbox acquired in 2019 for about $230 million, kept under its own name for three years, then folded into the Dropbox brand: HelloSign became Dropbox Sign, HelloWorks became Dropbox Forms, and HelloFax became Dropbox Fax, with the change walked through in a November 2022 session. Logins, passwords, and pricing carried over — but the independent identity customers had chosen was retired, a coupling that mattered when the Dropbox Sign environment was breached in 2024.

The zero-knowledge, client-side encryption tool many used specifically to keep files unreadable to providers like Dropbox. Dropbox acquired its key assets in November 2022; the standalone service stopped taking new users, and free licenses were cancelled as of January 31, 2023, with paid customers supported only through their existing contract terms.

An open-beta e-commerce feature launched in 2022 letting creators sell digital content directly through Dropbox with storefronts and personalized Shop URLs. Dropbox stated: "Support for Dropbox Shop, a feature that was available in beta, will end in 2023." "Starting May 15, 2023, Dropbox Shop will enter read-only mode. You'll no longer be able to create or modify listings and storefronts. Additionally, buyers won't be able to make purchases from you." It was fully discontinued July 7, 2023.

A PIN-protected folder for sensitive documents — passports, tax records, financial files — offered as a security perk of paid plans. Announced discontinued in January 2025; on March 4, 2025 every user's Vault was automatically converted into a standard folder, the PIN requirement removed, files left in place, with Dropbox saying it would "concentrate efforts on further improving existing security features and building new capabilities around advanced data protection."

A standalone screen-recording, GIF, screenshot, and audio tool with cloud links and lightweight commenting — Dropbox's answer to Loom and CleanShot. Dropbox emailed active users on February 20, 2025 that it was ending; discontinued March 24, 2025, after which users could no longer download the app, record new content, or share via Capture, and Dropbox pointed heavier users toward Dropbox Replay.

Dropbox's collaborative-document product, launched 2015-2017 as an answer to Google Docs and Notion. On October 9, 2025 Dropbox discontinued the Paper mobile apps and the beta desktop app, leaving Paper reachable only through a browser at paper.dropbox.com.

A built-in password manager launched 2020, storing logins, payment cards, and dark-web monitoring. Dropbox wound it down in phases: read-only from August 28, 2025, mobile app stopped September 11, 2025, and full discontinuation October 28, 2025 — after which all stored credentials and payment data were permanently deleted from Dropbox's servers. Users had to export their vault to CSV before the cutoff or lose the data outright.

The forms and document-template platform Dropbox acquired in December 2022 for about $95 million. Dropbox sharply reduced its investment in FormSwift at the start of 2025 and moved to wind the product down, with the wind-down extending toward the end of 2026; management acknowledged it as a meaningful headwind to revenue and paying-user counts.
