Ending Dropbox Capture: the screen-recording app shut in 2025
Announced February 2025 (discontinued 24 March 2025)
Dropbox discontinued Dropbox Capture, its screen-recording and screenshot tool, on 24 March 2025 — leaving users unable to create new recordings and folding leftover content back into an ordinary Dropbox folder.
What happened
Dropbox Capture was a standalone app for recording screen videos, GIFs, screenshots, and audio, with cloud links and lightweight commenting — Dropbox's answer to tools like Loom and CleanShot. It was promoted as part of Dropbox's push into asynchronous work communication.
Dropbox emailed active users on 20 February 2025 that the product would end, and discontinued it on 24 March 2025. After that date users could no longer download the Capture app, record new content, or share via Capture; existing captures remained in a Dropbox folder named 'Capture,' previously shared links redirected to standard Dropbox file previews, and some interactions such as quick-reaction comments were lost in the transition. Team Collection content moved to the creator's personal Capture folder, requiring manual re-sharing to preserve team access. Dropbox framed the move as letting it 'focus on building the best collaboration tools for work' within the core product, pointing heavier collaboration users toward Dropbox Replay.
Capture's closure came in the same wave as the discontinuation of Dropbox Vault and Dropbox Passwords, and users on Dropbox's forums grouped them together as evidence of a broad retreat from the add-on products Dropbox had spent years launching.
Impact
Capture's shutdown continued the well-worn cycle of Dropbox shipping a polished companion app, building a user base, and then retiring it within a few years when it no longer fit the roadmap. Users who had standardized on Capture for quick video explainers had to migrate to alternatives such as Loom, Zight, or CleanShot, and the clustering of the Capture, Vault, and Passwords shutdowns hardened the perception that Dropbox could not be trusted to sustain anything beyond core file sync.
